The working principle of vortex flow meter is based on Karman vortex street phenomenon. When a fluid (such as gas, liquid or steam) flows in a pipeline, if a non-streamlined obstacle
(such as a triangular prism or a trapezoidal prism) is inserted into the pipeline, this obstacle is called a vortex generator. When the fluid flows through the vortex generator, alternating
vortex columns with opposite rotation directions will be generated on both sides behind it. This vortex column is called Karman vortex street.
 
The vortex columns are arranged asymmetrically downstream of the vortex generator, and are alternately generated and separated. The release frequency of these vortices is proportional
to the average flow velocity of the fluid and inversely proportional to the characteristic width of the vortex generator. This relationship can be described by the Strouhal number (St), which is
a dimensionless number that represents the relationship between the vortex release frequency, the fluid flow velocity and the characteristic width of the vortex generator.
 
The vortex flowmeter uses detection elements (such as piezoelectric crystals, thermistors or capacitive sensors, etc.) to capture and measure the frequency of the vortex column. By measuring
the release frequency of the vortex, the average flow rate of the fluid can be calculated, and then the volume flow rate of the fluid can be calculated according to the cross-sectional area of ​​the pipeline.
